” Courage Can Break The Toughest Walls.
Maria Toorpakai Wazir is not just a sportsperson, but a trailblazer for women in the Pakistan–Afghanistan region, becoming the first Pashtun female athlete. Born in South Waziristan, one of the most dangerous places in the world, she defied Taliban oppression and cultural barriers to pursue her passion for sports. At the age of four, Maria cut her hair, dressed as a boy, and called herself Changez Khan so she could play freely in a society where girls were forbidden from school or sports.
At 12, she won the All-Pakistan U-16 Boys Weightlifting Championship, later turning to squash where she became Pakistan’s national champion and represented her country on the world stage, winning international medals. Despite threats, bullying, and attacks, Maria stood firm as a symbol of courage and resilience.
